I was lying on the
couch on a
cold January night.
Sheet lay on my pillow
with bed unmade and clothes unshed.
The hall gas stove flickered shadows
on the floor.
Flames dancing blocked
the locked bedroom door.
Love burned away
with cold flame
that would not return.
I turned off the light
in search of sleep
for the night, when I
felt the flames getting bright.
Shadows danced upon the wall.
Flames danced in the hall as
I raised up to see it all.
Flame jesters danced
around the door.
laughed and sang nevermore.
There is more evil
behind that door.
than you have ever
seen before.
I lay down and closed my eyes.
raised again to see
Devil jesters laughing at me.
Saying we will destroy your family.
I jumped up as the
flames went down,
A scorched circle
was all I found.
One month later,
I get a call,
Gone are the door
and the bedroom walls.
Fire claimed its evil,
for its own.
Nothing left of
a house
that was never
home.
