Papa's Gentle Whispers

I was about two years old,
when I met my Papa out on the farm.
He gave me a funny sideways look ,
and then reached out his big burly arm.

Come on tadpole we have things to do,
and your about the right size to teach them to.
He took my little hand and a whisper I did hear,
and I looked up and yelled whats that Papa as I turned up my little ear.

Oh its nothing son I was just talking to the man,
and you know he hears my every whisper and he understands .
One day you will hear them to but today a fishing we will go,
cause that's the job for today would you like to go.

Never been fishing before what is it I asked,
and Papa stopped and looked at me and his knee he did slap.
Never been fishing  well that truly is a crime ,
for I have been fishing since I was knee high to a grasshopper back in time.

A big smile crossed my face and I asked do grasshoppers get that big,
Well no Papa replied but back then when your little everything is .
Lets see he grabbed the poles and they headed down the lane,
and I got scared for I thought I would never get back home again .

Oh son there's nothing to be afraid of out here,
we are in Gods country there is nothing to fear.
Your old Papa has been coming here all his life ,
and I found out I was always bigger than the critters and they thought I would bite.

They settled down on a stump there along the river side ,
and that boy was checking it all out with those big brown eyes.
I gave him a pole and baited his first hook,
and as he watched me for a moment then he turned and wouldn't look .

We cast out our lines and Papa whispered again,
this time in the quietness I truly heard him.
He sang a little song I know to this day as an adult I stand,
it was FISHY FISHY IN THE BROOK,
WONT YOU COME AND BITE MY HOOK.
I WILL PUT YOU IN THE FRYING PAN,
AND THEN I WILL EAT YOU AS FAST AS I CAN.

I kind of giggled and he looked my way,
heard me then did you in the country its just that way,
A man can hear his thoughts even his heartbeat it's true ,
a place a man can be himself and Papa let a windy through.

Oh Papa ssh you will scare off the fish,
then all of a sudden one got a hold of the kids.
Papa make him stop this is my pole ,
and Papa laughed so hard for I truly was fighting with that fish you know.

After that day best buddies we became ,
and you know that little stinker past a stinker my way.
He giggled and said I saved it just for you,
just like the one at the river only yours smelled of poo.
