Cleaning House and Finding Home

Here I stand on a Saturday,
cleaning and fussing while others play.
My list of chores I have in my hand
and on the tape deck, my favorite band.

When cleaning my home and sanctuary
BonJovi must play or things get quite dreary!
Working my way through cleaning the house
I make sure leave nothing that draws bugs or a mouse.

Starting in the bathroom fair,
I clean the tub of soap scum and hair.
The toilet, again, has been used for a battle
between Cheerios and my nephew, Bogsittle.

In the bedrooms, I'm daunted by the toys and muck,
but girded with buckets, I just plain won't get stuck!
Then on to the living room, so big and bright,
to vacuum and dusting to make it all gleam and look right.

My bestest friend is kitchen I loath,
is the dishwasher, where my dishes do soak.
Giving the pantry a promise and lick,
I'm on to the laundry to battle dirt and grit!

Once it's all finished and the troops come on home,
I cringe when I meet them for I know what's to come.
Later that night when all quietly sleep,
once more through the house I will quietly creep.

Picking up here and straightening up there,
until I find a note, not quite square.
All this day I have grumbled and moaned
on the thankless work I do in this home.

Yet upon reading this note in my child's hand
I find courage once more to clean up after this clan.

Mommy, I love you for all that you do,
Cooking our supper and cleaning our shoes.
But I want you to know that this weekend is yours,
for you're taking time off while we kids do the chores.

Then after we're done and supper's prepared,
we'll eat as a family and again say prayer.

"Dear God, we thank you for the food that we eat,
the home that we live in and the shoes on our feet.
But most of all we thank you each day
for the Mother who loves us and cleans our home every day!"

Tears fall from my eyes as I read this sweet note,
written in childish hand, how could they know?
A pair of small arms curls around my waist,
followed close by another, all with no haste.

The morning sun will find us here,
curled up together as hugs and cuddles we share.
Never again will I see cleaning the same,
for now we all share and make it a game.

WoW!! LOL This is what I do...when I clean house. Bon Jovi is a great selection too Although I usually clean house to Stevie Nicks or Amy Lee from Evanescence. Nicely Done. One suggestion, in the phrase "My bestest friend is kitchen I loath" did you intentionally use the word bestest...because the correct form would be best, without the extra "est" ...but if you did it intentionally to add to the humorous nature of the poem..then by all means

i like how at the beginning, you sound like a typical mother, and the way you describe things made me think 'eww...' but then at the end i understood why your efforts were worthwhile. everything was totally realistic, too, which was a relief given the topic.

Aww....it's a sweet poem. I love the ending. And the descriptions of cleaning the house, making it sound like you're waging a war on dirt and dust, is wonderful

the ending is so sweet, and the beginning is something that i know all too well. but since i do not live at home anymore, and have a big stinky boy to clean up after, i can only hope he will get a kick of childlike gratuity, and take over the chores for a day.

This one is so awesome and I love the thought
of the love the family shows. Mother for the family
doing all that needs to be done, and the children for
the true love that showed in their notes.
