To Be Civilized...

Missing image

Man is too quick to go to war

believing it the road to peace.
Man is too quick to go to war.

We cannot be the world’s police
    and enter every foreign fray
believing it the road to peace.

The stakes grow higher every day;
we must debate before we fight
and enter every foreign fray.

Because two wrongs don’t make a right
    diplomacy should be the goal.
We must debate before we fight.

Since combat takes a heavy toll,
and even winners pay a cost,
diplomacy should be the goal.

We all will grieve when lives are lost.
Man is too quick to go to war,
and even winners pay a cost.
Man is too quick to go to war.

Author notes

The Terzanelle is a poetry type which is a combination of the villanelle and the
terza rima forms.

It is a 19-line poem consisting of five interlocking triplets/tercets plus a concluding quatrain in which the first and third lines of the first triplet appear as refrains.

The middle line of each triplet is repeated, reappearing as the last line of the succeeding triplet with the exception of the center line of the next-to-the-last stanza which appears in the quatrain.

"believing it the road to peace."this reminds me of a calvin and hobbes quote "dady, how does soldgers killing other soldgers solve the worlds problems"

i love the voice in the poem and the political view with out sounding dictating

The title of your poem made me think about the civility of war and inspired my own poem. You have carefully stated that war is sometimes an option, but should never be chosen until all other paths have been explored. I liked the formatting of this piece. Good luck in this contest. Peace, Liz

Very good. like ur take on anti-war. Has strong pro's and con's, but since before Christ, men have profit on war to keep the economy running. Without, we can't survive on a dead planet. My opinion lol. Kendhal2
