Damned for Glory

O, let us have a war in which to fight
where dying bloody-handed matters most,
where all are damned for glory’s honor bright!

Let cries erupt from each embattled host
as pipers chant their eerie, daunting skirl
where dying bloody-handed matters most!

Let’s have the blood-red battle flags unfurl
like harbingers of death above the din
as pipers chant their eerie, daunting skirl!

Let rise the fearful screams of dying men,
our prayer-like curses calling judgment down,
like harbingers of death above the din!

Let silence grow as warriors choke and drown
with blood that takes our mortal breath away,
our prayer-like curses calling judgment down.

Who curses glory that was won today?
O, let us have a war in which to fight
with blood that takes our mortal breath away,
where all are damned for glory’s honor bright!

Author notes

There is such a thing as a just war in a just cause, but warriors fight and die in a moment full of fear and blood. This poem is dedicated to warriors who, for a cause or country or for the vanity of their leaders, have lived through or died in such moments. The cost is theirs to pay, and glory is their due. The sacrifice and the glory earned is theirs alone. None but they may share in it, and they alone may know its worth.

A compelling, dark write that, I think, gives an honest glimpse at the "glory" that is war. Unfortunately, there ARE times when war is necessary. In those times, thank God for men, who even in that intense fear and pain, are willing to pay the ultimate price for others. They are all that stand between us, and enslavement. Wonderful work, Poet!

Thank you, and yes, thank the Lord for those who stand in harm's way for values treasured more than life. Let them have whatever honor they find in their service. My daily prayer is that few should discover it in the blood and death of friends or foes in any cause, just or otherwise.

This is a very moving poem. Catholic theorists have long tried to balance their distaste for war with the fact that it may sometimes be necessary. The wording of this poem reads like a call to battle and your author's notes are very educational. Good luck in this contest. Peace, Liz
