Foxholes

The truth is, we are all mere animals;
organisms even -
only slightly more complex than amoeba.

When you die, you die.
It is pure megalomania to think
that we humans are somehow above death;
that we, unlike any other creature
have the ability to transcend it.
And only because of our dominance,
our arrogance,
our cunning
and our ruthless natures.

But in death, to believe we are somehow special
in the eyes of a greater power,
that we can worm our way into the good graces
of this “creator” by kissing his ass, well…

Sadly, in a foxhole,
there is no such thing as an atheist…
I'm beyond atheism.
That part is easy –
you can't prove a negative
so there is no work to do.
This “I Believe" thing
demands something more personal,
some leap of faith that helps one see
life's bigger picture.

Now I can get on with my life.
I'm not greedy.
I have love. Blue skies, hugs,
rain, Hershey’s kisses, freedom,
beautiful children, sunflowers
and the power of speech.
That is enough. It has to be enough.
It is everything in the world
and everything in the world
is plenty for me.

It seems just impolite somehow
to beg the invisible for more.
I don’t need an omniscient,
omnipresent,

omnipotent force
that isn't bothered to help
or is just testing us…

I don't need heaven.
Love in all its aspects
                   is enough…

In spite of this being more polemic and less poetry, I see where you are coming from. The believers will believe what they want and the unbelievers will do their thing. I hope you feel better after this diatribe. Thanks for sharing!

Excellent! That is one of the main things wrong with the world today. We consentrate more on the idea that we are the greatest of all. But, we say that until we get attacked by the more cunning creatures we attempt to tame. Bravo.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. My opinion differs slightly to yours, but that is irrelevant. This is a wonderfully constructed poem. I tend to have a short attention span so to keep me enthralled for, what, forty-six lines of text is more than good. I also liked how it confronted arrogance with more arrogance; what else can we do? we're human! Very well done!

some beleive that love in fact is god, the very act of feeling it is the creator, what a concept that love could have created it all, or that nothing at all exists, this was a beautiful poem no matter what the outcome of the world and life as we know it. splendid write

That sounds precisely like Belief to me, my dear Friend. And Heaven. Love is all there ever was, ever is, ever will be...I think it's the only thing we can take with us when we go & the only thing we can leave behind...all else are leaves drifting on an unceasing wind. I've always thought myself to be more spiritual than religious...yet ,when a butterfly whispers in my ear, it causes a rising in that hollowed space that holds my soul. Assuming I have one, of course. lol Good luck in the contest, Sweetie. I always believe in you.
