It's Too Late

The time has come for me to think
about the many fools I've been,
    people I promised I'd visit
and the friends I lost in between.
    So, while my motives were honest;
that's what I thought at the time,
my actions were far from decisive
I just followed the easiest line.
Now is the time for me to act,
repay all the favours I've had,
    renew what friendships I'm able
show children I am a real dad.
    Heartache has led to depression
now my good health has gone to pot,
There's not enough time to unravel
    This terrible mess I've got.

How often we feel like this, wishing we had done things differently; wanting to change but never quite getting there. liked the thoughts expressed in these line, the rhythm rhyme and flow throughout the verse. We just have to stop, and make a complete 180 and try to catch up on things we have missed.

I think it does us oldies good to look back occasionally and try to carry forward the better bits of life. We all have a lot to offer the younger generation, but they probably won't listen, just as we didn't listen when we were young. Your comment and input greatly appreciated.

Thank you Carole, Good intentions are all very well, but I'm told the road to hell is paved with them. Action must be taken.

Hi Carol, I think we all have some regrets in our lives and inveterate wanderers like me may have a few more than some others. Friendship is priceless and when you move a lot you leave so many behind. Then you usually make a new batch of friends fairly quickly, so, although you regret leaving old friends you do give to the new ones. I always hope that the old friends also do the same. Life goes on.
Thank you for commenting, I appreciate it.

It may not be real... but I think it will be very relatable for many people! We all have some sort of regret that we wish we could make reperration for!

It's kind of strange for me to feel like this as I am the inveterate wanderer. Wanderers are always leaving friends behind, it goes with the wanderings. I was going through old photos when the poem came up. Thaks for taking the time to give a much appreciated comment.

    Strange

After reading your poem here five minutes since I just looked across to Oldpoetry and did my usual thing of clicking for a random poem. I came up with this http://oldpoetry.com/opoem/35604-Charles-Hanson-Towne-Around-The-Corner

Strange how an old poet and a current writer of poetry chose the same subject matter to write about. Plain coincidence ?, or is there a spiritual link we know nothing about?

We've all made those promises and never followed through. You can always make a start on some of them and enjoy whatever fruits are still left to pick from your calls.

In our prime of life we are just too busy living to place the correct value on old friends. With the onset of old age we have the time to reflect and maybe do something about old friends.

    Often

Bob I often reflect on what was and what is to be. We as humans make mistakes. The good thing, unless one is a sociopath, that we recoginze and at times try to rectify them. Strong and honest my friend.

It is a sad fact that we make these promises forgetting to allow for the demands life places on us. Later when the pace of life slows we reflect on friendships of another time.
