Smelling Fumes

I am running on empty
on interstate live
and there are
no exits to find.
I keep looking
all around
at the billboards
and towns.
I see nothing but
on ramps to
Interstate live.
A four lane road,
all running the same.
No U-turns allowed.
My God, this must be
the Devils highway.
Check your maps
before you go,
mark all the exits that
you know, before
you approach the
on ramp to go.
Before you enter
make sure you can
leave.

This was an interesting poem and very different from the other entries I've read so far. It paced like a rhyming poem and yet wasn't one, so I commend you on your rhythm. I liked the ending too. It reminded me of the old Eagles tune Hotel California ("You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave") which also is set on a highway. I liked this!

    Hood Winked!!

If only we had the forethought to think of your wise words before we start out and hit the go pedal not just thinking of the excitement which we hope lay ahead. Traffic conditions change without warning ... stop the world i want to get off. Nicely penned. Good luck in this contest.

Being stuck on empty with no exits sucks for sure. It is like not having a spare tire when you need one. Good luck to you in the contest.

Its so true. I agree with the first comment. I liked how there was such good use of metaphore in this poem. I have to say you are one of my favorites, it seems you can write anything. I very much enjoyed reading this and thank you for allowing me to do so.
