Parachute

  Parachute Aug. 2008

Nine lives, so they say
Has each cat in its day
I don’t know if that’s true
But listen up, what think you?

Found this storm-lashed wee babe
She’d been blown off a roof
Was it sad irony? Or was she
Living proof?

For, eight stories she fell
But had one left to tell
I will let it unfold
As to me it was told…

In storm gutter, lay trapped
Broken;
Gently I wrapped
This small bundle of fur
With the fragmented purr

Frightened eyes, paralysed
Staring out, taking in;
The world of the orphan
Deprived of her kin

And I, of no fixed abode
Of those days,
And the ways
Of my life on the road…

Just a floor and a mattress
Were all that we shared
For the wanderer, no comfort
Is squandered nor spared

But a friend is a gift
And one so cute
Earned my love and respect
And the name
Parachute!

But in time, love’s needs
Would surely dictate
Where her road and mine
Would separate

Nocturnal journeys
The call of the wild
Natures’ need for a mother
To be reconciled

With her own
Now she’d grown, instinct over ruled
The ways of nature
Are not easily fooled

She slew away
‘Neath a midnite moon
A tomcat lover
Would find her soon

And perchance a babe born
Strong and resolute
To fulfil the ninth life
Of my friend,
Parachute

You know I grew up with dogs, my folks bred bulldogs so there were never any cats around our place...
It was only in later life I became fond of cats, this was I think where it all started...ever since, I have had a few other felines that have kept me company and raised a few smiles! I'll write about them all in time!

Thank you Angel for reading and the special comment!

I guess my big love was pigeons, since a kid yeah I've thought about that y'know cause I don't like to see a bird in a cage, pigeons you let them out every morning and thy come home when it suits them...lol cat's are kinda like that too aren't they?
Come to think of it I'm a bit like that myself lol♥♥

    Oh so cute

As an animal lover and adoring cats, I love this. If that cat could have talked I am sure she would have thanked her saviour who helped her gain composure to carry on. Living a hard life can sometimes bring unexpected pleasures that no amount of money can buy. D xx

    Alive, so Alive

Absolutely engaging. You write so, so well my friend. A story that warms the heart and puts the moment to the test. Life on the edge, lived hard yet with the tenderness of a new spring day. crystallady

Simply breath-taking!Your writing leaves me with a hunger to strive to better my own to at least try and reach this level of greatness!I want to know your secrets and get in that head of yours!Love the BG too!
Your poem has touched me for I have done volunteer work with animals and have seen life's cruelty and neglect firsthand and it is indeed a sad sight to behold....the orphaned baby with no one to care for it and with no place to call it's own and only the noise of daily life to try and block out thoughts of fear and even that would make things worse.Sometimes we try as living beings to avoid our pain with BG noise to keep our demons and worries at bay,and since I know for a fact that animals are every bit as emotional as people are and can get depressed this has truly connected with my spirit and my kitty kin would love you if they knew your kind heart and nice warm embrace!Carry On Teaching People The Way With Your Words!-Blessed Be

      Saved this till last...

Ironic ain't it, you got me first on your list...oh well, cosmic connections are well known...some folks think and feel the same way about life and its sometimes issues
Y'know, I spent two years over in Cape Town as a volunteer worker, looking after homeless men; alcohol and substance abuse victims...I've paid my dues, been there y'know, ain't proud of a lot of things I've done...never mind, I done them anyway, maybe it was life's way of priming me for a role I had to fulfill...you can't help people unless you've been in thier shoes, that may not be too acurate, but I think that some folks are trained in the school of hard knocks...

I perceive you as a practical and balanced soul; not afraid to speak your mind, that's cool
I am the same way, but although we may speak, and understand the same language, we are diametricaly opposed
and that is cool...polarity keeps the world in check, though apart, still neck to neck

It's all about balance, no good walking a tightrope unless you got a safety net
      takes two to tango
      and I dare say,
      it takes two
      to walk a tightrope
      For
the one who's trying to fly
and the one who's waiting with open arms
      to catch the other
      should they fall...
      That's all
      Where did you come from?
      who can say?
      I'm just glad
      that you passed this way

      -oOo-

      Hey! here's something for your
      kitty cats...

It's called "Cat with no name"
Look it up when ya get a chance
I always had a certain fondness
      for lil' pussy's
      They have a mystical aura
      about them

      Stay cool

      John

    John,
You let the cat out of the bag and right into my hat on this one brother.
The cradle that once held it came into your life and now mine was given a silver spoon so we can both laugh at the man in the moon.
    Such joy sweet mystery brings....
such grand respect to an old friend....
    Love it my brother.

    Keep on pushin,
    straight ahead,
    Liam

      Yes they sure do!

I've had a few cats in my time...they're not like dogs, they're wanderers, nocturnal mystical creatures...I kinda relate to that somehow...one day I'll tell ya the story of "Submarine"...
      Thanks for reading

Man I must say this poem did hold me. It took me back to my days as a kid and a cat we had called ' The Bum' he roamed the streets and came and went as he pleased. We moved and about 2 months later he should up though we were a few miles away. Cats, yes nine lives for sure. Excellent write.

      Yep...

      Sure are strange creatures!
difference between a cat and a dog...

Dog goes: "hey! these humans, they treat us so well, feed us, give us a home, and love us...they must be Gods!"

Cat goes: "Hey! these humans, they treat us so well, feed us, give us a home, and love us...we must be Gods!"

I think it is so sweet that you rescued that little kitty. Very, very sweet. I rescued a bird yesterday. It hit my window so I went outside and picked it up and brought it in the house. It just sat on my finger with its beak open. Poor thing was just stunned. It was ready to fly again in about 20 minutes. Pam
