When Dreams Die

It wasn't supposed to happen this way;
We were supposed to always be together.
'Best Friends Forever' we'd say every day,
And we thought that it would be for forever.

She wasn't supposed to die at sixteen,
I wasn't supposed to move far away.
No one told us life could be so mean,
When reality rips away the 'some day'.

For a while all I could do was cry,
And wondered why it had turned out that way.
But then the years slowly passed by,
And now, I know 'goodbye was all I had to say.

What can you do when dreams die?
How can we pretend everything is the same?
Do we just tell the world that we don't cry,
And it doesn't bother us to say their name?

I do not know where I will go from here,
I just know that I will never be the same.
Yes, it hurt to lose someone so dear,
But I can still smile and be glad she came.
