The Whisper of Leaves

Islands of white drift 'cross the sky
To harken sweet thoughts upon the breeze,
Tree limbs rustle and shake o'erhead -
His voice is in the whisper of leaves

The night sky fills with stars above,
The crickets, they chirrup in the summer eve
As fireflies dart both hither and yon -
His voice is in the whisper of leaves

The rain is falling as soft as dreams
While our dancing souls silent music weave
As the sky sends kisses-sweet unto the earth -
His voice is in the whisper of leaves

I cannot rid myself of the harvest moon,
Nor the gift of love my soul receives,
I treasure each night, each day, each raindrop that falls,
For his voice is in the whisper of leaves...

Author notes

For my dearest WH. *smiles* The mere thought of seeing you again keeps me sane while you're away. I love you

May the wind carry your love back to you. I just LOVE the last line in each stanza. The Weeping Willow plays my love's favorite song. We use to sit under it for hours. This is just so beautiful. Thank you for entering it and good luck. Hugs~ Cuddles

    Very beautiful and idyllic.

The repetition of the last line in each verse works very well. It reinforces the idea throughout the piece.

The images of fallen leaves on the ground, bare tree limbs and the harvest moon suggest autumn and make for a melancholy mood, like you're writing about a loss you feel as well as the love you remember.

    Thoroughly enjoyed this.

I could imagine my lost love as the "whisper of leaves"...He died of cancer a few months ago, and we'd always write poetry about eachother, often concerning love and nature. I swear I can almost hear him sometimes in the rain and in the wind...thank you for writing this...I understand what it feels like when nature just completely reminds you of the one you love <3

    Great job.
