One Night of Love, (For Lancelot and Guenevere)

L.
I dreamed this night a hundred times
so rich a pleasure could be mine,
to own, to hold, lay bare of robes,
yea, let such beauty shine for only me.
Wouldst that I could carry thee
beyond the eyes of men,
goodbye the realm, disband all care,
defy our stars and in some far off land
marry thee there,
where only angels ken.

G
I care not what the world might moan
behold, a moon as light as day,
fair game we be to them that play
at hog and hare with sticks and stones,
their feint hearts newly turned,
would soonest have me flayed and burned.
This once loved Queen now spurned,
so Kings might have their way.

Oh love, we yearn,‘ tho it be right or no,
draw near, I am a woman born
not the queen the court has scorned.
I come here unadorned,
my heart must have it so.

Perfect each kiss in longing drenched
embrace me strong ere reason fails,
I need to cling, my body sing
on waves of bliss and crashing sails.
For just this night be close my love,
as one beneath yon willow tree
make long and tender love to me,
a night to slave my memory.
There, on that soft willow mound
wouldst seem to me a magic spot,
where once our love did live and die
our shadows will forever lie
so closely bound we ne’er be found
within the realm of Camelot.

Promise this my knight
what ere ten thousand summers bring,
our flame of love will ne’er be quenched,
not even for a mighty king.

"...yea, let such beauty shine for only me..."
"...behold, a moon as light as day..."
"...our shadows will forever lie so closely bound..."

Some lovely nighttime imagery here. It was romantic in an epic-story kind of way (which makes sense given the legend), and the last few ideas were twinged with sadness. Like they know their love will "live and die." I liked it.

    very heart warming.. good luck

  • A well written poem with some beautiful ideas. It flows well and the older style of language has been used subtly and not overdone. Good luck in the contest.

  • Thank you for this beautiful entry
    Well done

    Tales from Camelot!

are always a joy from me. This was a passionate love that broke a friendship and a marriage. Thanks for sharing this with us.

This is a beautiful, exquisite poem of love. The old english enhances the text giving it even greater charm. This was enjoyable to read and ponder, well done my friend!

This is certainly an interesting piece on these two I haven't read anything about them in a while and this brings back the old stories beautifully done, with some wonderful imagery, a very enjoyable read!

    Keep writing

    Perfect period piece

Well I've bookmarked it! Now I only have left to find the words to say how much I loved it. ...I LOVED IT!

The whole poem is magical and the sense of love shines all the way. There are so many great lines. Some of my favourites are...
"make long and tender love to me
a night to slave my memory."
"where once our love did live and die
    our shadows will forever lie
so closely bound we ne’er be found
    within the realm of Camelot."

I really think you should do a whole book on this couple, I remember another poem which you wrote about Guinevere and Lancelot. You do these so well...alby
