Election

Let's strip the old man of his glory
forget the service he has rendered
for his battling country.

His many years of service in the Senate,
are a mere moment of 26 years
in the lives of the oppressed,
so allow us to favor them
when voting in this election.

Forget his strength of character
that led him to champion his men in war
and stay a prisoner with them for five years,
though he was told he could go free.

He did not want preferential treatment
because his father was a four star admiral.

Toss out the stars and crosses he earned
as a hero in Vietnam.

He was a maverick where no one dared be one.
He didn't forget the people or his promises,
but fought his party to deliver.

Let us deny the truth
that he is steadfast and honest
and stands by what he believes
no matter the pressures,
that he is highly respected in Congress.

By all means ignore
that he has gone over the seas many times
to visit the torn countries of war
where he has sought to understand,
make the correct calls when voting
and heal breeches diplomatically.

Turn our ears backward to allow us to forget
that last year we heard HIM say the troops
should be coming home at precisely the time
his opponent has now decided they should.

His son is in Iraq but how can that matter to us?
He is happy we are at war, yes?
No.
He is just a man who has convictions.
But by all means,
don't consider that.

Let us all pretend
that we don't want that kind of man
for president.

Instead, let's call him old,
identify him with a party with which
he disagrees regularly
and quote him from years ago
to make him look inconsistent.

Let's vote out of prejudice against his party
and continue to besmirch him.

I am really enlightened by this. I had no clue about this side of McCain. I appreciate the information you've given me. I feel much more prepared to vote now just with this little bit of detail.

I like how you say at the end people are prejudice against the "party".. kinda like some people are prejudice against Obama, but just for different reasons.

I'm a bloody liberal myself but I still see the value in this poem.

I am so glad to have helped you in making your decision. McCain has been saying the same things for many years, while his opponent has just begun to echo what he has said before. I believe that Mr. Obama will say anything to get elected. Lately he has been trying to gain republican voters by changing what he says to them.

When this all started, I was very open to either candidate but have closely listened to what (and when) they have said. McCain doesn't have a year on the Senate floor. He has two decades. He already knows the issues inside out. ~ Joyce
