Desert Moon Mirage

Missing image
The moon is full and bright tonight

Exposing cold lies he told in the daylight

As he crawls on his old, drunken knees

In pornographic mania and guilty release

Mid-life never saw anything as wretched as this

He lives for a short time in guilty bliss

As his addiction runs all through the night

There is no denying the cold facts of his life

He attempts to hide the stain he wallows in

With no hope for tomorrow as his dying begins

Not long from his cold and desperate grave

He has forgotten the love I freely gave

I'm as cold as the cracks he threw my way

In this mirage with my dignity torn away

And the moon is full and bright tonight

Exposing my dreams for a happier life

Author notes

In the last stanza, the cracks are cold comments he made in trying to justify his addiction.

Yeah, this is the extreme of another write. The picture is taken at night obviously, and there's nobody around.
It lends a supernatural effect, and sure, I can see it being a persons' road to Damascus so to speak.
I feel sorry for that man. I hope he makes it out alive.

Best wishes, this was a very thought inspiring piece.

A most fitting and apt ...

way of sharing morose thoughts poetically. I'm sure as we all get older that we notice how detremental defeating habits are and especially when we find ourselves close to them and long instead to be miles away and sharing that moon with someone who is deserving of our care and attention. I saw this contest and had no idea where to take the picture but certainly appreciate where you took it. Good luck in the contest ... joy

Wow... This is powerful stuff. Addiction turns the best of us into someone... something... else. Very strong work my friend!
