She loves me anyway

Missing image
Yes, my walk is kind of funny,
God made me that way,
I'm going to try everything
to keep it out of my way,
cause Mom says I'm beautiful.
She says I'm funny too,
no need to look so hard at me,
I won't hurt you.

She says I'm made from Heaven,
never of the Earth,
I'm her everything
she's ever wanted,
since before my birth.

She doesn't care that
I can't run, jump
or skip like others,
she sits with me,
and reads to me,
and sometimes
we'll paint, or color.

I know my Mama loves me,
she tells me everyday,
she says I'm her little angel,
and loves me anyway.

Sometimes kids laugh at me
they call me names too.
Treat me like I'm different, and
they have better things to do. . .

But I don't let it stop me!
No way, not a chance!
I'll somehow make my own way,
Teach you my way to dance!

And if they think I'm different
well, maybe that might be true,
but I don't want to be anyone,
I like who I am too!

Mama is proud of me,
she tells me all the time.
She says no one can stop me,
or kill my light that shines.

And I shall make my way,
find my dream come true
If you want to be friends,
then you can go there too.

Author notes

photo of mother and baby elephant is done by a photographer named Brandt.
I thought about Horton the Elephant Bird. Horton hears a Who...Dr. Suess.
My kids and I love this book, for this very reason.

Society's Reject.

Thank you for sharing her with me this write.
She's beautiful Jodi.

I chose kids who weren't retarded or extremely handicapped, because people tend to overlook the children not in a wheelchair, or severely malformed in some way. Kids that get left behind from the rest of the class, because they just can't seem to catch up. Autistic children especially, seem to be treated as if they're problem, or Autism is the child's fault.
Does that make sense?
A club foot, or hair-lip. A kid who might have six fingers on one hand.
and "otherwise are perfectly normal."

    This is extremely well-put.
So much thought has gone into expressing a
POV that might cause eyes to behold these
children in another, more graceful light.
Being the mother of two autistic sons, this
verse reaches me on a personal level. Glad
to see gold recognition given here. Blue

while reading this poem, I got goosebumps and it brought tears to my eyes. so much truth within these words. it seems any child who is considered different goes through this. though they shouldn't be taunted, treated anything like this. unfortunately it happens.

this poem is outstanding, I truly love it.

    good luck sissy

I like poems that deal with social issues and you have focused on one of these in a very charming and non threatening way.
    "Mama is proud of me,
she tells me all the time.
She says no one can stop me,
or kill my light that shines."
We need more Mamas in this world of ours.

The gift is seeing the Light of the child and not the shell that houses it. Then the gifts are constant and the sharing pure. It is the difference between those who help out of pity and those who help out of kindness. You know. It takes practice to learn how to show your respect for anoher person's dignity and honor who they are. It is a practice well worth developing as your poem so artfully displays.
    Love, Tom B.
