Patches

Patches is my name, and there is reason.
I have more patches then I have stuffing I think.
That is why Patches was the name I was given
When I came to stay at my latest home.

It could be said I've been around a bit.
I have traveled all over the USA
Snuggling into any little heart I could fit
Bringing smiles to faces all over the place.

I was in the hospital for a little while,
I stuck close to a little bald girl
Giving that brave little girl a reason to smile
Until she went to heaven to be a little angel.

Then I moved onto a little boy with Cistic Fibrosis
And was in his arms whenever it was hard to breathe,
Drawing on me always brought him happiness,
So I wear the ink marks he gave me with pride.

I spent time with a boy with a hole in his heart,
Then a little girl that never seemed to be well.
All my little friends lived far apart,
But they all live in the same place now.

A nice lady found out about all I've done,
So she decided I had earned my retirement.
But her own little girl still gets me out and has fun,
So I guess it isn't retirement all the way.

Since your author's notes are asking for what we think, here is my humble opinion, please keep in mind I am not trying to offend your poem as I know poetry is personal to it's author.

It's just totally unbelievable and a little sensationalist, like trying too hard for that emotion. Stuffed animals would be destroyed, especially ones that had been around sick children (Velveteen Rabbit, anyone).

I think you have a FANTASTIC idea here, but I personally feel that it would have worked better if each stanza was a different teddy bear special to the circumstance.

Thank you for entering the contest.

    That's really precious!

I love the storyline, esp. the ending! Bears should never go into retirement. My teddy Thingol was made in the early 1900s; his brown wool exterior smoothed down and moth-eaten a bit, but dearly loved! Thank you for entering!
