I love that jacket for sentimental reasons,
sad reasons, though I also love it because it is so nice
and looked smart when I first bought it.
I bought it with part of some money my father gave me
which was part of an inheritance from his mother.
This was a year or so after my Grandma died
and Dad sent each of us a cheque,
my brother and my sisters and I.
I decided to spend the money on extras,
to make life easier because I was writing,
working on a children's book.
Anyway, I was walking by a row of shops one day
and spotted the jacket, a lovely jacket,
a sort of imitation suede, light coloured
and a nice style. The grandma money
meant I could afford it.
I think my father was a little hurt
when I called it the grandma money.
He is gone now too and I wish I hadn't
said "grandma money."
Really it was Dad's money.
Maybe this all sounds a bit silly
but I do love that jacket
even though it is over 10 years old now
and doesn't quite come clean
even when I take it to the dry cleaners.

It's funny how some little thing like that can become an offense - calling it the grandma money seems sort of loving and appropriate, yet your dad felt slighted. Family matters.
By the way, Pamela A Lamppa is hosting an interesting contest at the moment that is inspired by quotes from Longfellow that all have to do with the word "Jacket".

Is this based on a true story?
It's a good poem. I like how you said "grandma money."
It was a nice choice of words -
It's easy to get sentimental about those special belongings which carry a trace of the love that someone bore us. I find this an engaging piece of story-telling, good luck in contest.
