washing dirt into the dishes.
Rinsing with my unseen tears,
too dry to fall in drops of guilt.
Tattered dress hides the welts
of blood chilling hatred
given in the name of family pride.
My grey ashen existence is mask
enough to shield a tiny ember.
The life that still bides deep within
a withered frame too young to die.
How can I still feel this pain, this love
for one who shattered the mirror of my heart?
In its place the raging fires of revenge
should rise and consume me.
Yet, feel I nothing but the dull drumming
of hurt within my breast.
I long not for his Midas touch,
but merely the dream he brought.
The gossamer of glamour
and warmth of being wanted.
To find refuge, however fleeting,
for a soul ravaged by loneliness.
No, he was no prince nor king,
but for a time,
despite the deceit,
he was mine.

Oh poor poor Merope! You had to feel sorry for her! Imagine having to magic someone to love you like she did! I could never live a lie like that, but then, I've never been without love as she was.
So sad! Brilliant poem though!

Hi Dolly!
How lovely to have you read my work. I'm glad you enjoyed this one! Merope was one of my most favourite characters in the books. I really think it would be a best seller if her story was written. Thank you for your lovely comments!

ahhh, yes, poor Merope!
I've never read anything from her point of view before. . .a painful monologue from a life that ended in tragedy. . .good write, poet
I think you mean The Half-Blood Prince, she didn't appear in the last book, I don't think. . .pleased to find another Potter fan, I am one myself. . .
those books are truly outstanding

Hi LadyElinor!
I'm very heartwarmed that you liked this one because it is a favourite. Merope's character was only very briefly in the book, but her presence was resounding. She held all the secrets of Voldemorts past. Oops! Silly me, it was 'The Half Blood Prince'. I've made the alterations.
I've just been to see the film of it at the cinema and was sad to see no sign of Merope. Good to know that you're a 'Potter' fan and you're right, those books are amazing! Thank you.

you're quite welcome
they didn't have her character in the movie?
I haven't seen it - I'm shocked - how could they leave her out?

This is wonderfully and beautifully sad piece of poetry! I loved it, loved it! Is it from Celti Myth?? I do not know poor Merope... bravo!

Hi Eusebius
It's heartwarming to know you liked this poem despite not knowwing who poor Merope is. She makes but a fleeting appearance (less than half a page) in one of the Harry Potter books, 'The Half Blood Prince'.
She lives a life of cruelty and emptiness, which is only made worse by her foolishness in falling for Tom Riddle, a rich muggle's (non-magic person) son.
But Merope is all too aware that he would never love her back, as she is cross eyed and plain to the point of ugliness. She casts a spell to change her appearance (a 'glamour'), and he falls for her. Unfortunately, he proves fickle but for Merope it is too late as she is with child. She dies giving birth to her son, Voldemort.
Gripping stuff. I would have loved to play her character.
Thank you for your lovely comments.

Hi mcw
Thank you for your great comments on 'Song of Merope'. So glad you liked it.

It is beautiful, and heart-wrenching and though I am not familiar with the character, the feelings expressed here are universal.

Thank you for your super comments. Yes, sadly, Merope's plight is all too familliar. She appears in the Harry Potter books for less than half a page, yet leaves a lasting impression. Such a wonderful character. Thanks again.

This is a great tribute to Merope...of her lonely sad life. She just goes to show that if you don't feel loved by someone it makes you feel useless.
"The gossamer of glamour
and warmth of being wanted."
"To find refuge, however fleeting,
for a soul ravaged by loneliness."
Loved theses lines!
great write
Oh...I've read all the Harry Potter books and I love them so much that I've read them over and over till the charators have become my family!

Thank you Piccola
I'm so glad you liked it. Did you know that this is Voldemorts mother, from the Harry Potter novels?
Thank you for reading.

Very thought-provoking...
This is one piece that I had to read more than once. It is a painful poem to read in its entirety (sp?) at one time. But I loved the surrealistic metaphor and the vivid imagery. This is a very brilliant write!! Thank you for sharing your masterwork with all of us today. Peace, Cyn

Hi Rose,
Yes, it's very painful, for Merope was a tragic but compelling character.
Don't know if you've read the book (from the Harry Potter series), but your comments hit the nail on the head. Yours is tribute indeed as I've read some of your poetry and admire your work immensely. Thank you so much.

Excellent Job!!!! I love how you took on her perspective. I felt so sorry for her in Deathly Hallows.
-
-
Ah! Someone who knows the story!
Thank you for your lovely comments. Yes, I felt for her too. She was a tragic character, but she proved her family wrong, she was in fact brilliant at magic. Their criticism is what made her finally give up and not even try to save herself in the end. Thanks again.

Hello.
This is written very well, and you could have gone into the whole "oh woe betide" melodramatic, but you didn't, and I like that. This write doesn't gloss the pain, or hide from it, and it shows character and realism for that. The character comes from her truth, but also an acknowledgment that princes and kings are for fairy tales, and although they may or may not exist in reality, not all get their prince or king. There is also a sense of accepting her pain, for she doesn't seek revenge, the extrapolations from that are many, but again, it could speak of character, an understanding that it is for the best for he was not her prince or king, perhaps she has gone past or not arrived at that stage, amongst other things.
Your actual write, punctuation seemed fine to me, not overly wordy, packs quite a punch. I have read the other comments, but I can not comment on Merope the character or any of that, as I haven't read any Harry Potter books, so any relevance, any small tips of the hat or extrapolations from her appearances I am ignorant to. But I can, appreciate this in its own right.
A good strong write.
My regards.
Edit: Spelt a word wrong, hahah.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. You really got to the heart of it. That's always a boost when people get what you are trying to say, but even more in this case where the character and storyline were unknown. many thanks.

The Merope from the Harry Potter book/s?
Great write for sure, even better if its the same person as I think. -
-
Yes, it is Merope from the Harry Potter books. She's a powerful and compelling character even though her appearance in the book is brief. Thank you for your lovely comments.

This one is delicately balanced
between equal parts of despair and resignation, a bittersweet lament. Well done.
I especially liked this:
"I long not for his Midas touch,
but merely the dream he brought."
I think those lines epitomize the whole piece.

-
-
Thank you! Yes, those lines do sum it all up. It was all a dream, as he never intended to love her. Poor Merope. Sadly, sometimes real life can be like that too.
Thanks again.

Everything right about this one ..perfect

Wow that was quick, I hadn't finished the background!!!
Thank you so much for you're comments. I really feel for Merope. She's a powerful character, despite her brief appearance in the book.
