Being a dad is such a glorious way
to hide my inner child,
I could comb the toy aisles
without fear,
"for the kids"
the wonderful words
to keep curious eyes
from wondering why
my fingers are fondling
some yo-yo or bag of marbles.
Christmas so ideal,
when I could "help" my son
enjoy his toy soldiers and cap gun.
How I thought my charade
was such a victory,
even sneaking into his room
when nobody was home,
just to a secret romp
among the plastic pearls
of my own youth.
It all came undone
on that day they came home early,
wife and our friends
finding me on my knees,
pushing a fire engine
and making siren sounds,
lips could never wash away
the red upon my face.

Oh wow!!! I just love the last stanza. That's the trouble with so many adults now, they forget how to play. Good luck with this...
