Native Soul

The soul of the sunset whispers my name
beckons me back, asserting my claim,
voices resound on the cool windless plains
for time that as been has far reaching strains.

To fly with the eagles, run with the deer
the rhythm of nature calls loud and clear,
to see with my heart instead of my eyes
and loosen the bind of my false disguise

I walk between worlds part red and part white
living in limbo I keen my just right,
raised from the red clay, nurtured from birth
heartbeats attuned to the beat of the earth.

Her breath in my lungs, her spark in my breast
I’m equal to anyone, this I attest,
I’ll run with the wind, live proud and free
this is my heritage bequeathed on me.

The blood of my people steeped in the sand
drowning our footprints from our native land,
no governing power can ever control
I am who I am, it’s etched on my soul.

This is just a beautiful piece you have penned. I also would like to fly like and Eagle and run like a deer. I'd like a deer for a pet. Good luck in the contest...Katie

    Very Awesome!

As I was reading this poem, I felt as though I was in the tall grasses on the plain and the wind was blowing as I held onto my blanket. My heart was filled with the love of the land and the pride of my people. Great write! I especially loved how the effect of the words you chose, took me there. Incredible! This stirred my soul. Thank you.

On whole, I enjoyed reading this. The flow seemed a little off, but not too badly. My favorite stanza was the last one.

I am who I am, it's etched on my soul. I love the imagery in the beginning parts, then you go in a bit heavy handed, I think, with the identity bit. The last line, however, is very strong and brings the poem to a powerful conclusion.
