They were my decisions that brought me here
This hour's end is but mine to know
The horizon ignites, where the sun settles low
I will offer my thoughts to the nodding sphere
So to the end of the docks I go
Relinquishing burdens received years ago
I know at this place I have nothing to fear
This hour's end is but mine to know
Received by the waves, my words sink below
My secrets, I know, these friends will revere
So to the end of the docks I go
No Fate dwells here with weight to bestow
Only my own design to which I must adhere
This hour's end is but mine to know
And day falls away under a warm copper glow
I know my own peace, as the night draws near
And so to the end of the docks I go
This hour's end is but mine to know
Author notes
I tend to think of the "meaning of life", as it were, as a subjective thing. My life does not mean to me what it means to someone else, nor does not come in even a similar frame to that of my neighbor. I think we all find/create our own reasons for action and for continuing on. Some choose to live for religion, some for love, some adventure and experience. I personally think at the end of the day, the only person or conscience you have to answer to is your own.
And... I could just continue rambling about that, but I won't.
I have a feeling I will return to this in the future to re-work it. It's a bit rough, but will have to do for now.
I'm not a huge fan of rhyme myself, but I like using it in structured style, so this was an attempted villanelle. Regardless, the prompt got me thinking and writing, which I haven't done in a while (the writing part, anyhow.)

Great job on the form! I was really excited to see a well-written villanelle in here. You used the refrains very well and this poem exhibits great skill. I love the imagery in the fourth stanza, and the thoughts expressed in this poem are fantastic. While the concept might have felt a little cliché if not conveyed poetically, you did wonderful work here in making a beautiful, powerful, and thought-provoking poem. I really enjoyed reading this. Thanks so much for entering!
