Winter Solstice

The dreaded Winter Solstice has begun
as breezes echo through the Sacred Tree.
Chaos causes fears of aberration

and calendars have stopped in harmony.
I try to see this change objectively
and know this is the coming of an age.
Our planet now has simply turned her page.

The people gather in their sacred shrines
as scientists explain away their fears.
The wars have stopped, there are no borderlines
and heavens have absorbed our human tears.
The wheel of modern science now appears
to lose momentum slowing to a halt
while grass and roots replace the hot asphalt.

The bones of all the bridges are at rest
and transportation simply fades away.
The animals now seem to be possessed
and play with us to pass the time of day.
The towers of the mighty show decay
as lovely flowers blanket them unfurled.
We’re new creations in a brand new world.

reading your poem filled me with peace and confidence ... its message resonates with an inner truth I vaguely perceive/know deep, deep inside my soul ... I have had many dreams and visions that are on the same wavelength as your message, either we are both nuts or we're both wise ... we might also be "crazily wise", who knows ?
I appreciate the ambiance in your verse, the vocabulary is elegant but not trying to "impress" too much, which would stimulate my mind rather than my heart (I have spent all my life in my mind, and definitely need a break now ... ) on the other side, it is NOT simplistic or lacking mastery of poetic devices ... in fact, this poem is lacking nothing at all, for me it is perfect ...

    thank you so much,
    marion

Great insight and take on the contest title and a good rhyming scheme used. Some inspiring lines in this poem and one of my favs i have read in this contest so far. Just one thing on the 2nd line , did you mean sacred tree? Not sure if it was a typo. Either way i liked this a lot best of luck

What a unique metaphysical take on the prompt. You have correctly interpreted the Mayan date as "the beginning of a new cycle". Let's hope that the new cycle is as beautiful as your poem.

Cool write about the year 2012! Some see it as a fearful time and some believe it to be a wonderful time of change. I wonder...? Anyways, loved this line, "Our planet now has simply turned her page."
Very well done Rhyme Royal! Good luck in the contest!

WOW! You never cease to amaze me! What a wonderful read this one is!! Not sure if I have ever seen this form before, and well, since I can not rhyme to save my life, not sure I will be trying this! But you, you are sooooo good at it! What a great job you did on it!

Best of luck in this contest!

    and love

    Nyetta

  • Such beautiful metre, I assume that the first and third lines rhyme perfectly for you, although for me that required a re-read of the first stanza.
I have always loved this verse form, the idiosyncrasy of the ababbcc scheme seems to suit us English.
Although I am pretty sure your predictions are not accurate I enjoyed the poetry immensely, thank-you for a wonderful poem.

    I love a rime royale!

Very different take on doomsday, lovely to see an ancient verse form being used for the end of all days, great stuff.
But, as an aside, do we get the London Olympics in first?
