"School days, school days,
those dear old golden rule days.
Reading and writing and 'rithmetic"
God, how those words could make me sick!
Looming was the threat of summer school,
if you failed to pass, smart kids made you feel like a fool.
I was the nerdy kid wearing the alligator shirts,
and had to explain any rips, stains or dirt.
Hated homework, didn't like to study and never paid much attention,
my mind seemed stuck on spring break, unable to learn, refusing to listen.
Separate lunch lines, no mixed couples allowed at school functions, what a strange
rule!
Gangs carried chains, threatened teachers, fights so bad we were sent home from
school.
The eighties came, we welcomed the changes, watched as things started to turn
around.
The future was ours for the taking as we were graduation bound.
Memories of all the fun we had, sleep overs, all night movies, crushes, silly
things we once did,
just the two of us, my best friend and I, back when we were a couple of kids.
Author notes
this was how things were when I was in junior and senior high school. I was pretty much alone except for my best friend, who was right there with me from second grade through graduation. I'm happy to say that she's still my best friend.

That's awesome that you still have your best friend. I enjoyed this very much. You did a great job with my prompt. Thank you for posting in my contest.
