Cinderella's Plight

Cinders would lay cold and alone
Afraid to even move or groan,
Beneath the weight of a pernicious eye
That undid love and led her awry.

After years of slaving hard and long
For a mother to whom she did not belong,
This pretty child found a shred joy
In the gaze of a striking boy.

And on sneaking from the house one night
This boy did hold Cinderella tight
He swallowed all his princely pride:
He asked Cinders to be his bride.

Charming got down on bended knee
Before Cindy: a princess to be!
He swore away his life to hers,
Vowed to share all of his worth.

Charming’s Ball? Alas, a lie.
Though women were in good supply,
He knew just whom to pick for life
To become his final Wife.

And though Cinderella ought to be there,
The prince could see not hide nor hair
Of the only girl he could ever love
With the voice that sang like a turtle-dove.

Her innocence rang like a bell,
Her beauty made his weak heart swell.
And though young in years this prince was, true
He could not wait to say “I Do”

And standing at the balcony rail,
His eyes scanned the crowd to no avail,
For a tall slim girl with the blondest hair.
Alas: Cinderella was not there.

For as she turned to leave that night,
She stumbled on an almighty sight.
Her stepmother stood fierce and in her way,
Forcing Cindy in her home to stay.

A wage-less maid could not attend a ball!
And marrying Cinders off wouldn’t do at all.
She must stay within her mother’s gaze,
And attend her tasks in the usual ways.

Cinderella’s heart did turn to stone,
And when finally she was quite alone:
She grabbed for a bat with a grimy hand
And for reasons she did not understand

Beat her Mother around the head,
And on making sure she was quite dead,
She tipped her into the lake at dusk
And on giving that almighty thrust:

She sprinted back to the house to scrub
At the floor painted with blood.
Tossing her stained dress onto the flames,
Cindy tried to forget her dreadful shame.

As she danced she did not meet Charming’s eye
And as he spoke she tried not to cry.
Her prince could think of nothing but:
Had Cinderella fallen out of Love?

With heavy hearts and lost in thought,
Cinders and Prince grew more distraught:
One with grief and one with guilt.
Their strong outer selves began to wilt.

And Prince took Princess by one hand
Onto a balcony to view the land.
He told Cinders he planned to jump,
Unless she confessed what she had done.

And the tale spilled out
Between her tears,
And Princey could not
Believe his ears.

And despite Cinderella’s need to weep
His heart gave a tremendous leap!
And knowing the strength of their true love,
He wrapped her in an embracing hug.

And so, full of a new found hope
The young couple planned to elope.
To this day they live the lives of peasants
In a home, small but pleasant.

Under the immovable cloud,
In which Cinders shall always be shroud.
Of what their simple, happy life did cost,
And the lives and friends each of them lost.

They say on the stillest of nights,
You can hear that evil Stepmother’s plight.
Her calls for Cindy echo about the shore
In the voice of the waves forever more.
