My Friend Betty
I have a friend I met when I came here;
have been best friends, we hit it off first go.
We met one day at bingo hall last year
I sat alone there feeling very low.
She said to me “Sit down on this spare chair,
no fun to stay there by yourself my dear.”
We found we clicked that day without a care
and when I won they all let out a cheer.
She drove me home as Heath had took the car.
We said we’d meet again same time next week.
Our friendship grew each day and would go far.
To enjoy each others company we seek.
We go for walks each day to keep us fit.
When Heath’s away we often meet for lunch
He says he doesn’t mind one little bit
and knows I’m safe among this crazy bunch.
I’ve met so many friends of Betty’s now
we laugh a lot each week we have much fun.
The greatest bunch of gals I’ve met; I vow
to keep the friendships strong that I’ve begun.
When things are tough you can rely on a friend
to walk beside you till the very end.

Author notes
When I first moved to Christchurch New Zealand I only knew Heath, Hugh and Edna. But I am gradually making new friends, Betty is fantastic and she lets me use her PC to post my poems.

Hey, you called Betty and her crowd insane...poor Betty.

It nice when we find like minded folk to share our insanity with...sorry, I was thinking about me.
It's good to hang out with folk with just like to have fun...I'm speaking theoretically...I never have fun...I'm all business.

Dear Hine, Betty has been a good friend to you from the day you both met at the bingo hall. Good friends are rare and need to be appreciated, I hope you give Betty a copy of this lovely poem.
Love AJ

Dear Hine, You've spoken to me often about Betty and I've even spoken to her on the phone. You are both good pals and her friends have accepted you into her group, which I think is great! A lovely poem dear cuz.

It makes such a difference in a new place, to find one good friend. It usually turns out that her friends are good to know, too! Your story is well told and interesting, and strikes a chord for me. Good luck!

Dear Hinemoa,
What would we do without the intervention of Paul Getty?
How else would one pay tribute to a charming friend like Betty?
I guess that, being a kiwi, she don't speak the Aussie lingo
so you can understand her when she talks to you at bingo!
Since you came to New Zealand, with a lot of friends you've mixed
but tell me: have you taken your egg-timer to be fixed?
I refer to Heathcote's story of the substitute you use
but realise the two of you don't really need excuse!
A most engaging poem. Good luck in the voting, my dear.
Applause, love and hugs, XXX Hugh (R.)

A delightful tale,
the story so entertaning,
the connection so worth the explaining.
Lucky are we when we make that connection!

Dear Hinemoa,
I enjoyed your poem about your friend, Betty. She sounds like a good person for you to be friends with. I used to love playing bingo with my Mom..since she's been gone, I don't go to the bingo parlors anymore. I'm glad you have Betty and her friends to have fun with. I could use some friends like that..too bad I live so far away.
Best of Luck in the contest!

Oh Hine,
How very pretty you paint the picture of your friend Betty. Isn't it wonderful to have girlfriends to pal around with. Girlfriends are so different from the 'friends' of the opposite sex and can always be relyed on to be there when we need them..
It certainly is a good thing you and Heath both have friends with PC's...other wise we would miss out on such nice poetry as this and the ones Heathcote posts from Hugh's PC...
This is such a lovely poem..Good luck in the contest...Darlene

We find friends in some of the most unexpected places... even bingo parlors. When I lived in Washington I used to play bingo frequently with friends and my daughters and I know what great comradiere can come about of it.
A wonderful poem of fun and friendship
Goos luck in the contst
Dee
