I'm left staring at the sky
the broken branches stretch above
attaining heights I never dared to climb
the towering majesty holds my breath
a fear that catches in my chest
As this becomes all I know
composing the world in my vision
the life that grows above me
and, strangely, the rough grey bark
draws my eyes more than the sunlight
the cracks and joins much more
than just a cedar tree
Perhaps I was right to lie here, dreaming
the world beyond lost in a jumble of leaves
as I slowly come to understand myself
in the secrets this old cedar whispers
The leaves that fall in autumn are not lost
the buds that blossom early are not wasted
sacrifices are a vital part of growth
for without the soil below, how could we grow taller?
standing on the shoulders of those who came before
those who dared to reach for the sky
