We are Descendents of the Dragon
opening our arms to you
you, every race, every nationality...
showering you with these fireworks that leap
from the dragonbird's nest
showing you our beautiful peach flowers and
white dove songs of peace
telling you that you are welcome here.

Welcome to Beijing!

Beijing has put on new clothes
A beautiful, formal dress made just for the occasion.
Flags adorn every street and park, flying as
the wind shakes the trees, bearing the words
One World One Dream
Olympic rings painted on the road.
You see monuments everywhere, of our FuWa
"Children of Good Fortune"
surrounding you with this beauty that we've created just for you.

We show you our culture now, today when the Olympics begin
We recite the words of Confucius, our teacher, relive the
boat-rowing of the past, show to you our compass which we founded
Always pointing to the south so that the emperor could face
unconquered lands.
We have drummers, dancers, masters of taijiquan
gathering to welcome you.

Embrace this red, yellow, and white
As it embraces you.
Show us your athletes, show us your skill
Do not hesitate before our welcome.
And meet in joy and fraternity
as we compete for the gold
together.

BEJING 2008 -
One World One Dream...

Author notes

I watched the fireworks above TianAnMen square from my upstairs balcony. It was all so beautiful! I nearly cried when I saw the performances in the first night, I was so proud to be there and to be Chinese.

I am sure you were proud.

This poem is heartfelt and well-worked as stanzaic free verse.
You wrote to both date and graphic so well.
Images and themes of this event are woven well together.
For a non-Chinese person, this poem should be an eye-opener.
Thank youso much for being a participant in this contest.
