Just before the fretboard, after players play their parts,
slightly after arrogance; before the tuning starts,
I hold inside my body all the rage of lying men,
I hold inside my soul the battle I will fight again.
Just before the amplifier, and before the chord,
I try to be the satisfier for the bloody sword.
Down into the bottom of the cask of bitter wine
I dip into the melody until I'm feeling fine.
I scream through strings of bronze and steel
with fingers caught by life;
I weep for all the things I feel
and work out all my strife.
At last, my lips are sealed again,
my hands have found their place;
I lay them softly there and then
I brighten up my face.
The scream has turned to lullaby,
the rage has turned to dance;
once more I don't have to cry,
I've changed my circumstance.
