in the shadows...
sits a Kevlar, a vest, an M16, and a soldier
taking a break from packing his bags
finally its only a few days
until he will be home once more
to see the woman he had to leave behind
to finaly met his twin babies
he lowers his head as the tears
begin to flow free down his checks
he says a prayer as he cries
for the soldiers that wont make it home
for the families who recieve a flag
for the soldiers he watched die
for the soldiers missing in action
for the soldiers he wasnt quick enough to act for
for the soldiers who got injured
for his love ones as he ends his prayer
he asks god for his own safe return into their arms
in the shadows...
sits a row of graves
markers of those who have fallen
a cross made out of their boots,
Kevlar, M16, and dog tags
brothers and sisters who fell as one
defending one another not fighting for freedom
but those who stand beside you
those who will never be able to forget you
those who will always remember just what you gave up
for them, a wife, a husband, a daughter, a son,
a life they will never again see
from the shadows...
emerges several busses full of soldiers
finally after months of being away
returning to their loved ones
returning to the life that will never seem the same
walk a mile in the shoes of a soldier that goes off to war
not knowing if youl return home or not
walk a mile in the shoes of a soldiers loved ones
that are left befind as they defend freedom in another country
only the strong hearted and strong spirited survive

That section really hit me hard; it's the thought of them going home, and their loved ones at home are so thankful that they're still alive, but life will never be the same again, it coudln't be after going through what is war - the horrors, and the pain, and the fear - just impossible -
and yet i get so upset when people assume that every single last soldier coming home from war is a good person, and a hero, and should be commended for just having been there, because people shouldn't be allowed to generalise like that - all soldiers are human, and some of them are just MONSTERS!
I'm getting off track, sorry, the topic of war can do that to me. This was wonderfully written, I loved thew ay that you kept the shadow idea from different angles -
thanks for entering

We all take for granted what they do for us and how difficult it is, but we need to remember that there are people keeping us safe and risking their necks.
