"Fire flower"

A black marker clouds a whiteboard

trying to describe the showering

of color in the night sky on canada

day

While a quiet korean student hides

in the tall reeds

unable to follow the pen’s ebbing

tide

When suddenly a small voice

surfaces in the room

exclaiming the curious words

“bul got!”

her young face burning, shining

      Sorry for the late reply.

The actuality of events are the real backdrop.
I was teaching English in Korea to a shy young Korean girl, in a one-on-one period. She couldn't understand my description for "fireworks".
When her face suddenly lit up and she shouted "bul got".
The expression "bul got", for me, was exotic. And her shy burning face
was like a "fire flower", her Korean translation for fireworks.
The tall reeds and the ebbing tide were my worry I wasn't communicating.
