A Stranger's Thoughts

Look at all those people
Staring at strangers passing by
Like aliens
Not known by now
And never to be known

Stare, folks
Never mind
Because as strangers
We know that we can't live
We'll be chased

Chased down roads
Not to disturb your harmony
That does not exist

Because after years being chased
We know that your world will go down
And after all a stranger will
Stand on a hill
Laugh and sing a tremendous song,

"Free at last
Free at last
Thank God Almighty
We'll be free at last!"

Author notes

Was just thinking about the Civil Rights Movement in the USA, rascism, and stuff like that. The last stanza is a song of the Blacks which I totally like.

There is such a powerful message in this. Such striking imagery too. Are you studying the American Civil Rights movement in school? I am and it is fascinating and ultimately inspiring. Just reading about it is so emotive.
    Great poem

Last four lines are also a direct excerpt from Martin Luther King Jr's famous I have a dream speech.

"And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing
'Free at last, free at last.
Thank God Almighty, we are free at last.'"

Thanks for the entry and good luck.

I know, I know that speech by heart, and I love it. That's mainly where I got to know the song, and I did listen to the music too. I love that one. Thanks for your comment.
