If Only...

If only I could take each time we shared
and string them together
like a necklace of pearls,
to carry with me and never let go.

Because I find that I’m forgetting.

I try to hold you tight to me -
my love, my heart, my soul.
But still you slip away;
droplets of rain endlessly falling.
Falling into an ocean of nothing.

They say that one tear raises the ocean
but it seems my tears are lost
and the ocean stays the same.

I find I can’t remember you

I try to see your face
and I try to hear your voice
and I try to find your reflection
in a broken mirror.

But that mirrors mocks me and shows me
the truth; I am alone.
You are gone and all I see
are my own eyes wet with futile tears.

If only I could bring you back
and be with you again.
I want to feel your arms around me;
I need to remember the scent of your skin
and the soft of you hair.
The rain on my skin when we danced together.
The sun in my eyes as we talked forever.

If only you were here with me.

If only…

Author notes

A rewrite of a poem I wrote several years back. This version flows much better and is in general the goodly version. Yeah.

    i absolutely love this.
    for months i felt this way about my ex-- i can definitely see where you're coming from.
    the emotion was great, even if it was a rewrite based off of an old piece.
    the flow was enjoyable to read--even though i don't usually like rhyming.
    great job. thanks for entering my contest & good luck
