Brother of My Heart

Brother of My Heart

When I met you, I didn't like you,
Just on principle, the Sisterhood Code
Another man come into my sister's life
You would find yourself unworthy, blame her
Stand at the corner bar building your self-esteem
Make jokes about her while your friends toasted, laughing
But that didn't happen

Then I watched you, expecting you to falter
Baby sister I may be, but paladin I remain
Expecting you to dance behind "protector"
Insinuating yourself to become "possessor"
Stealing her brilliance for your own
As you expected her "to make a happy home"
But that didn't happen

Then I liked you because she liked you
You made her laugh, you share her dreams
She could be vulnerable and intolerable
The sisterhood watched your every move
You could have been a lesser man
You could have run
But that didn't happen

Then I loved you because she loved you
You calmed her soul, but you gave her fire
You challenged her, yet you gave her a safe haven
You made her believe in eternity
But you treated her as if today were all that mattered
You could have used her love as a weapon
But that didn't happen

Random selection or survival of the fittest
Nature versus Nurture
Mitosis and Meiosis
Education versus Environment
Any one of an innumerable human being might have come to be
But that didn't happen

Now I love you because I love you
Your tenderness is a touchstone in my sister's life
Your strength is an anchor when she is weak
You seek to make the world better by making yourself better
You are one of the most beautiful humans I have ever known
I would be a lesser person, had we never met
But that didn't happen

The universe made you- Brother of my heart

The man repeats the labors of Hercules, passes the tests, endures the ordeals, and is at last elevated 'to the concave sphere of the heavens, one with the revolution of the stars.'

Fantastic! So many of us are suspicious of our loved one's chosen mates. Very few of us can claim closeness and love. You are lucky and so is he.

    Very touching!

This is a departure from other poems you have posted, and a very special and personal poem. I hope you will share it with the brother of your heart. He will treasure it. Well done, poet!
