I could write a thousand pages
‘bout the things you’ve done to me.
But distance and the time that’s passed
Have let me also see
That in the midst of all the blame
And the way it all went wrong
You weren’t the only one who took
The melody from our song.
We both we young and so naïve,
With no idea what lay in store
Or what we either one should do
To make the music soar.
For reasons unexplainable,
Either then or now,
We stood there in the presence of God
And took those sacred vows.
But time would soon begin to show
How wrong our choice had been.
Not only were we not “in love”,
We didn’t even make good friends.
There were moments when you tried
And yes, I had mine too.
It seems our timing never meshed
The tension just grew and grew.
Children came and filled the house
It seemed life was going right.
We watched them grow and flourish
Then we saw them copy our fights.
We grew farther apart each day
Somewhere we just lost touch,
Gone was the hope of reclaiming the time
We had thought we loved so much.
No matter your infidelities,
Or the hurtful words you said,
The fact I didn’t inspire you more
Is a fault upon MY head.
I take no blame for your choices
But I accept I held you at bay
And helped turn a sincere attempt at love
Into a song no one could play.
So now has come the time at last
To put it all in tune.
We did what we knew at the time to do
But from the start, we know it was doomed.
Now is the time to move onward
And relish what lies ahead.
For both of us, though far apart,
Still hear the music in our heads.
