Summer in the city

Missing image
#

A stillness sat soft in the back street alleys
washing hung limp cross the cobbled stone way
Silence screamed out from the noisy dwellings
seeming as if to proclaim the day

Dandelion’s smiled in their golden splendour
red fire weed stood straight and tall
Groundsel clung to the brick strewn rubble
bindweed ran cross a derelict wall

Butterflies sipped at the scarlet thistle
grasshoppers sang in the green scrub grass
Honey bees raced round the rolling brambles
where spiders hung out their webs of glass

Caterpillars dined midst the stinging nettles
wasps held a feast in an old jam jar
A Ladybird drank from a rain filled bean can
ants built their nest neath the wheel of a car

Sparrows bathed, in the dust filled hollows
while a blackbird called from a treetop high
A solitary cloud in the clear blue heaven
smiled knowingly as it drifted on by

Magic was seen on the city's waste land
there where the grime kissed children play
My eyes saw the beauty of this green Oasis
summertime called on the slums today

A sad fell in this beauty my friend

You have been missed this summer. Probably as busy as I have been. Trying to stretch these warm summer days long so we are more ready for the cold shorter winter ones.

    I am doing OK.

    Your friend,
    Jim

Just marvelous. I'm so glad I stopped by your page. This was well worth the wait...one of your best! The imagery is superb and, of course, the rhyming is flawless. It is apparent that you put a lot of time and thought into your poems. You were the first poet I placed on my favorites list here at AP and you are still at the top of that list. I hope you are having a nice summer. My son was in London for a few days last month on a business trip. He had a wonderful time. Cheers ~ Sue

    Imagery complete ...

and as each verse unfolded, I was right there with you. The photo was a perfect addition to your words and I could see both in the pages of a book one day. Very nicely shared observation. I did stumble on the last line and thought that it should read: Summertime call(ed) on the slums today ... but really was unsure and reread the last verse several times to see what I might have missed. joy

    what a painting!

    Every line paints a picture!
It's amazing how beauty can be found if only you look for it. Both in unusual AND the usual places.
Artfully done as I remember finding in your writes. (Been gone for a while...me that is) LOL

Fortunate are we who can see beauty in the most unusual and unlikely of places.
Thankfully you are one of those people. x

    Wonderful

What a clever and thoughtful piece you've created here, turning something which we often frown upon into a thing of beauty. The wealth of varied beauty that you describe takes us unaware as well. There is so much that we just don't see. There for the content.

The poetry and its construction is wonderful as well. It reads so gently and smoothly and the rhymes are very effortless concise . . . and fitting. Great job.

    wonderful !

The words and imagery are just delightful and the rhyme scheme flows extremely well. It makes a change to read a properly constructed piece of poetry that remains consistant from beginning to end.
    Great stuff !
