When Will We Learn?

We turn a blind eye for no one can we trust
No where is safe for us in our world of pretend
Wounds running deep - unseen - no one can mend
Morals are a feeble joke, long ago succumbed to rust

Here, charity can never start at our own homes
In a safe cocoon we ignore as the rest are alone
Practicing not what we preach with hearts made of stone
Writing of illogical beauty and goodness in Stupidity's tomes

Our women are objectified like we are worth nothing
Attacked to no avail, and still the criminals we are
Beaten down repeatedly too scared to see each scar
We can't be smart, but not dumb - we are ALL dying

At least here we can pretend we are in luck
It could be much worse as the war could be here
Raped, beaten, and left for dead without even a tear
As the reality is glazed over as they all run amuck

On the other side, the fear is even worse
Genocide is the now, lives are dispensable
They ones who could fix it don't care, aren't able
I'd like to know when being a woman became a curse

Somehow minds became warped and irrevocably sick
We use power to make others small, in our shadow
Victims are easy to find and torture for show
Whether human or beast, any age for this antic

Why do we find it funny I cannot help but wonder?
Why is this the only way to be happy, to feel good?
What happened to HUMANITY, and to behave as we should?
Why should I even have these atrocities to ponder?

We can be tortured for anything under the sky
Sexual preference, intelligence levels, personality
We're HURTING and no one CARES, this is the true atrocity!
When nothing can be changed, why do we even try!

From Darfur to Zimbabwe to almost all the Middle East
Black engulfs the dying light for the hope of the day
Tearing out our dignity and serving it back on a gilded tray
In our homes we wish for when they violence will be ceased

Plethoras of lifeless bodies strewn all over our time
If history repeats itself, why haven't we gotten a clue?
Never watching what we say, only abusing with what we do
Placed on pedestals as heroes for even the most hideous crime

I can hate and be hurt with all of my feeble human might
Nothing has changed, only for the worse just maybe
I cannot walk the streets without fear or even just be
The gore that coats each and every day blinds every sight

I'm ashamed to be human, and to live on this earth
Knowing what I know, and seeing all the hurt
Each alone is worthy and the rest less than dirt
When will the torture stop for what is it worth?

Author notes

I tried to cover all the bases of the shame of being human except for political injustice, because I just wrote a piece about that. If I missed anything, please please please PM me and tell me, even if the contest is already over.

In response to your Author's Note. This is your personal piece, it includes things you want to write about and not I and therefore I don't think you can "miss anything".

Firstly...the form. I have never really been a fan of this style of rhyme, but I think you have pulled it off quite well. A few of the stanzas were a little convoluted but most were good.

You have put a lot of effort into this and I have to commend you for that, your rhymes themselves are good and your vocabulary also.

Just a tip for all the things you have put in CAPS, we all now can use italics, bold or underlined and I feel they may work a little more subtley in putting the emphasis on the words you want emphasizing.

Thank you for your entry, you did a good job, especially with this form as it's hard to impress (me) with it.

    Good luck
