The Message for Today

Thank you Hugh and dear Maureen,
for a place to speak my mind;
you know it's true, the two of you,
no finer friends could I find.

A roadside sign on the county line
holds the message for today:
We try and fail, despair and wail,
but "A friend loves you anyway."

With true friends the biggest thing is you can be yourself, speaking your mind, taking liberties... There is warmth in this poem, warmth that permits no frost.

Thank you Venu, that is a great way to put it. When one has real friends, it is nice to take the time to recognize it.

You are right, Hugh and Maureen are good people...except when they are annoyed with me which is often, at those times they are less than good people...yes, that is sort of the antithesis of your point, but of course I am just being silly.

You are still very wise Margaret, and it's an apropos poem for this contest. And your style is how I would like to have written my entries but alas I am stuck between those opposite poles of mine: cynicism and the cockamamie. I foolishly keep telling myself somewhere in between hides intelligence and art...but I have a feeling you aren't caught between those two contrasts so apparently I'm on the wrong track...my typically long and confusing way of saying you are talented. Sadly my blabbing makes sense to me.

    Enjoyed yours!

And then the converse of your verse
    just when everything is shot,
darkest days your fate will curse,
find out who your friends are not.

Love ditty "and" Road sign quote

If you take a spill on the road of life and find a male friend there to ease the strife. In you're an unmarried woman he might make a good husband. If all is vice versa therein could be a wife to share your life. Yet never say just a friend or you might lose around the bend. If nobody standing by this sign look up to God before crossing county line.

Then follow the signs to Margaret's Garden for tea and crumpets for "friends she loves anyway even if try and fail and despair and wail". For most people who have true friends, like Margaret, do since are a true friend. So Margaret finds many friends around the bend or some find her with a message to send.

It seems to me it is a while
Since you appeared with M.G. smile
And so it's good to see you back
And know that you are still on track
Some sonnets soon? They're on the way
Till then, keep up the good work. K.

    Dear Margaret,

So glad you feel as a friend I'm fine!
I agree with the words on the sign that say,
"We try and fail, despair and wail,
but "A friend loves you anyway."

A friend doesn't love you in spite of your faults,
sometimes you're loved because of them!
If you were perfect, God knows it's true,
I'd despair of being 'good enough' for you!

    Loved your poem!

    ♥ Maureen

Dear Maureen, thank you for your presence and kindness, and your never-failing wisdom. It's true,
"A friend doesn't love you in spite of your faults,
sometimes you're loved because of them!"
and I have had a clear view of my faults, so that,
"I'd despair of being 'good enough' for you!"
Thanks again for a great contest, and for computing the votes.

    Dear Margaret

Though you and I have had our frowns,
our laughs and smiles, our ups and downs
and, though I may have caused a tear,
as friend, I hold you very dear.

I'm sure this you already know
"the best of friendships always grow"
and I would ever have it so:
to speak without offense or fear,
to trust each other's love and care
and keep our friendship in repair.

Thankyou for your lovely words, Margaret, and for entering them in our contest. We'd have missed your participation if you hadn't arrived back in time.
    Good luck in the voting.
Applause, love and hugs, XXX Hugh (R.)

I do not know the company ...

But, where would we be without friends. Real friends not like Mr Worldly Wiseman from The Pilgrim's Progress!
Lots of cheer (not the wet sort!) Ron.
