I read a line of poetry tonight
that was so good I thought about stealing it
reworking it,
making it my own.
Isn’t that what poetry is?
the same shit said over again
by a different colored pen…
I’m an old hack
hunched over on a keyboard
cigarette smoke blinding my eyes
condensation from my rum and coke
forming pools deep enough to drown in.
And I sit here, only typing to
avoid the blank page. It doesn’t
even matter what I type anymore
there’s nothing left to say.
Just fill up the page
to avoid feeling lonely.

I think every writer sees a line now and then and wishes it had instead been written by them ( uh oh incidental rhyme lol ) Imagery and emotion both have clarity, perhaps when we write we are speaking to ourselves first and foremost and secondry is the hope that others may hear. Extra brownie points for the rum and coke
Indeed it's hard to find the words to say when they've nearly always been said before, funny thing about cliches, as poets we try and avoid them and yet they obviously have mass appeal for they are used so often in speech. Re the original thought, a well educated but pretentious person I once knew liked to expound re the original thoughts of Plato ( ad verbatum) I suggested that perhaps Plato may not have had those thoughts first but been the first to have those particular thoughts recorded...to which this person turned beetroot and told me what a moron I was and I delighted in telling him that that wasn't an original thought either for I'd been called it before! End of rambling on account of I am slowing the server down
