Forgotten Heroes

Missing image
See a poor homeless man asleep upon the street,
see the look upon his face, a sad story of defeat.
Proudly served his country with honor and pride,
filled with hopelessness, now rooted deep inside.

Came back from a war that could never be won,
Soldiers did their best, fought to get the job done.
Powers that be at home, tied their hands for years,
Fifty thousand died, among the chaos and tears.

Many came home addicted, lost to drugs and booze,
Young men drafted into a war they did not choose.
Vietnam War had ended, America was not victorious,
homecoming afterwards was not respectful or glorious.

No help for their addictions, some wandered all alone,
Having flashbacks of horrors, never to forget or atone.
Wandered streets in daytime, hoping just to be fed,
ate meals in soup kitchens, shelters to lay his head.

God help these brave men, so many are still lost,
lift them up, these proud men, are wars final cost.
Show them you care, how you gave your life lovingly,
You were mocked, spat at,before you found victory.

Day of the Lord is near, time to help your fellow man,
God's tells us that we must try to do all that we can.
When you see a homeless vet, you know what to do,
Help them because,  but for the grace of God go you.

Author notes

Let us always remember all our veterans. Let us give them all the respect and honor they all deserve. As we sit in the comfort of our homes, let us give thanks to all those who have served and those serving today. Thank you for keeping our country free so we may enjoy our freedom since we won our independence. Thank all of you and God Bless all of you.

This one has a tear hidden in it from me. Memories so vivid, people hailed us as baby killers and spit on our pride and dedication. Those killed, wounded and just wanting to die to get home. They are on the street, begging for a handout. We should not question their needs, God knows that, share some small amount without judgement.

    Outstanding

The Vietnam veterans certainly got a tough time when they got home- many struggled to adjust back to everyday life as their scars were too deep. I thought this poem was well-written and very true. Every respect for raising awareness for veterans of war for as you so rightly say they risk their lives to protect freedom and they should be honoured and valued accordingly. Best of luck in the contest.

Great write, but a sad story. Many people are against wars and shun the soldiers. This drives the reality of that home. Beautiful reminder.

Beautiful stated! Such a sad story of truth for too many...I know many of these men and we have forgotten them as a Nation, sometimes I am shamed by the way we have treated such brave and honorable men...
    thank you for this reminder...
    Blessings,

    AMEN!

A very sad story about the forgotten soldiers. Unfortunately, they have been tossed aside by society. So true, Auntie Sandy. Thanks for sharing this.
