Words For Women

Read your poetry books
naked in bed

it is the way they
were meant to be read

throw away
the lipstick

you don’t need to be
colored with crayons

make your vows to
the earth

throw your prayers
up to the moon

if they go further

you are blessed

say what you feel
and if no one gets it

move on

tease time into a corner
then walk away

make your own rules
with heart

never forget
you became a woman

at birth.

different to your usual style but very enjoyable

  • I love it. The whole thing is a beautifully crafted anthem to women every where. It sings out the true spirit of what makes a woman beautiful.

I love the line about being colored with crayons. It's imagery is wonderful and it encompasses more than it seems to at first reading.

Thank you for entering, and good luck.

I thought this piece caught the concept of "strong independent modern woman" very well, Lane. Unfortunately, you were really up against a very strong field. Bronze was the best I could do. Thank you for entering my contest, it was a wonderful read. :-)

You don't need to be coloured with crayons...

LOVE THIS! I hardly ever wear makeup, who's with me? *grins* You're so right, Delaney. It's the little things that make a difference, and making peace with ourselves. Stunning write that hits the nail on the head. I hope this makes it into print so that far more women see it.

Isn't this so true, you hit the nail on the head here, if we can't do these things we need to go back and teach ourselves how.

    Flawlessly captured prompt.

    My favorite lines:

    it is the way they
    were meant to be read

    you don’t need to be
    colored with crayons

    say what you feel
and if no one gets it
    move on

    tease time into a corner
    then walk away

    never forget
    you became a woman
    at birth

In short, the entire poem. Amazing, as is always anticipated!

    Supple, Warm, Powerful...

... come to mind as my first impressions about this poem. I like the building images of freedom. Even though the ‘making rules by your heart’ is a little scary to me ... it’s also tantalizing. I also like the way you wove in the notion of timelessness of female aspects in these lines: “tease time into a corner, then walk away” and “you became a woman, at birth”. Your beauty is all over this piece. Bravo! Thank you, Sultan

When you begin a poem with constant meter and rhyme, it's weird when it goes away. Also, this seems like the mantra of a girl, not a woman.

there was no constant meter or rhyme...and if you feel it sounded like a mantra for a girl then great...all girls need to feel special. thanks for the read.

indeed, inner beauty, the two most beautiful women I know, while they are both beautiful on the outside, very much so....it's their inner beauty which gives them that
extra special glitter, like the brightest firefly's in
the night's meadow. and these two are one's who'd NEVER be caught in a mason jar, anymore than one could catch a moonbeam. A lot of truth...and beauty to this write of yours...a while lot.
