It's the hand clasp and the good word
and the 'great to know you' smile
that does the most and helps the most
to make the world worthwhile!
It's all of us together, or,
it's only you and I -
A ringing song of friendship
and a word or two of cheer,
then all the world is gladder and
the bending sky is clear.
It's you and I together, and,
we're brothers one and all -
Whenever through good fellowship,
we hear the subtle call.
Whenever in the ruck of things,
we feel the helping hand
or see the deeper glow that
none but we may understand -
Then all the world is good to us
and all is worth the while;
It's the hand clasp and the good word
and the 'great to know you' smile!

Wow!
I like this very much, Maureen! The last two stanzas are especially clear and poignant. Can you clarify the note at the end - are you the editor of the anthology as well as author of the verse?
Anyway, excellent thoughts, this is the value of friendship.

Dear Margaret,
A friend recently gave me the anthology of inspirational verse and prose called "Leaves of Gold". It was printed in the 30's. In it was a poem that I really liked except for some antiquated terminology and the first and last verse which needed 'something extra'. I updated it and added to it. There was no author listed. I added my note at the end of the poem hoping my explanation of how the poem came about would suffice (especially since it was a non-entry in the contest). I'm glad you liked it.

Dear Maureen, your poem is bonza mate and so very true, friends are very important in our lives.
Love Jen.

Thanks, Jen!
Friends are priceless to me. Whenever I had a birthday cake with candles on my birthday, I used to wish for friends as I blew the candles out.
Love, Maureen

My dearest Maureen, beautifully written and very true, we must tell all our friends how much we care for them.
To greet a friend or even someone passing by in Australia we say "G'day mate!" A smile too goes a long way when given or received and brightens someones day.
I love you poem my sweet Soul/Sister.
Love Joan

Dearest Joan,
Thank you for always making me feel 'special'.
You have a knack for doing that with everyone, I bet!
I am thankful to have a sweet Soul/Sister like you! Take good care of yourself..I want both of us to be around for a very long time!
Much Love and Big Hugs,
♥ Maureen

A beautiful heartwarming poem, Maureen. All too often we take our friends for granted until one day when their true friendship lifts our spirits, sees us through sadness, or laughs with us over even the most trivial of things.
A lovely piece and I wish you good luck in the contest

Odd you couldn't make a video for this. Easy for me to say since I've never made one. I did make a socket puppet video once but I never could figure out how to get it on AP.

Lovely words, sentiment...and you didn't even have to keep those friends behind a wall...I should try that approach sometime!
In my serious moments (I have a few) I admit that your words are very true and the sentiment worthy. Having an affinity with another fellow human being (or animal for that matter) is uplifting in any number of ways.

Thank you, Yem! I appreciate your willingness to be serious when the 'words are true and the sentiment worthy'.

I'm looking forward to another entry from you!

Dear Maureen,
With you, my dear, I'd like to say
that every day is "Friendship Day"
and though we're far apart, we might
say: "friendship carries through the night".
Although we dwell in different climes
and different clocks tell different times,
I like to think our friendship, Maur,
endures through 7/24.
~~~
I love the metrical perfection of your poem almost as much as the thoughtfully chosen words which are so expressive of the worth of friendship.
Applause, love and hugs and thanks for a splendid and most appropriate choice of topic for your contest. XXX
Dear Hugh,
You are a very special friend,
although we're worlds apart.
Distance makes no difference
dear, in matters of the heart!
Your compassion and your loyalty
have always seen me through.
No matter what is bothering me,
you know just what to do.
Thank you for your friendship
that reaches cross the sea.
You'll always see a Welcome sign
and lots of smiles from me!
Love and Hugs,
♥ Maureen
