Growing Old

So many mistakes, broken dreams
worn by age, feelings too extremes.
Here at my life's narrowed road end
with little left, all hopes descend.

Growing tired, too many bad breaks
decisions, failures, loves heartaches.
People I've known years, trusted friends
their broken words, brotherhood ends.

You get older, just getting by
believing in your soul, you try.
Not much to offer of yourself,
holding on, put hurt on a shelf.

Finding you want faith you believe
knowing it's only hope they leave,
You go on thinking people care,
they'll have enough heart to be fair.

You lived by your word and heart
your own troubles, fault not apart,
made some bad choices, I can see,
good man, I always tried to be.

Years add up and your weather worn
you just want to avoid the thorn,

but there is nothing you can do

just want to matter somehow, too.

Thank you very much for this entry. It was an interesting read and hit the nail on the head. We are none of us getting any younger, but we all hope to be around for a while yet

The prompt of "old" brings reflections of wanting to be significant and leaving one's mark in the world. Plus evaluating life in a way we wouldn't before. This write touches on ones emotions. All I can say Wolfie is that you matter a lot to many of us..and are appreciated for your love, kindness and sincerity...and for so many things...A good poet bar none..artist...a multitude of qualities...and a good father....Bless you! Bravo! Good luck with the contest!

i liked it a lot, i thought it was very soft but at the same time very captivating. it had a nice calmness to it as well, narration that showed wisdom and tiredness. kinda like youre saying 'ive seen it all, all that's left is time to not repeat the same mistakes.' i could be wrong, but either way i really enjoyed it.

    $%@#% good write, Dave !!!

A lot of very poignant writing has been done on this theme and this is not the least among them!
Every person wants to feel that their life has had meaning, impact and import. I've got a feeling you've not done a lot of searching if you feel you're coming up short here, Dave.
If I'm nothing else in this world, I'm a good judge of a person's heart and character, even if we've done nothing more than had a chat or two.
I see how you take to people, and them to you. I see in your writing the sincerity, 1/10 of which I wish I had,
that you cannot but help display. It is not in you to do otherwise! And those are the kind of people you like and like to be surrounded by! Maybe we are lucky and blessed, all the crap we've endured notwithstanding.
I've got an extra pair of glasses if you have trouble reading this, but I'm hoping you save me the postage!

I love this poem, genuinely and truly! I know it doesn't speak for you alone or me for that matter, but for the many of us who have less time in front of us than we do in back.

Be good brother, and keep writing these good poems,
something else you can't help but do!

When it is my turn, all I'm going to say is

    Adios Muchachos!

      Thank You John

Besides your kind words, compliments and encouragement you have always offered in your comments you have also given of yourself and taken the time to give thought and heart to the things you have to say and you say them with meaning and I appreciate that.

Odd how of all the people we come in contact with on the net some we feel a good bond and friendship. I have liked you from day one my friend, your a good man, thank you for your kindness and your friendship.

Hang on to the glasses John I read it just fine thank you very much.

I hope we have that beer one day, John.
      Best regards
      David

    Excellent

Such a humble poem. We've all made our mistakes and hopefully try to do the best we can. You are a good man, nothing wrong with not wanting to be hurt.... Guess what you do matter, you matter to a lot of people on here and many other places I'm sure.

Your poem rhymed and flowed so well. The in depth meaning of a man's life journey is beautiful.. Hey big brother best of luck in the contest. Excellent poem as always...
