Can We Be Sure?

So many times a day
You walk through the streets
And see strangers,
Strangers you don't like at once.

They don't have the body you like,
They have a nerve-racking voice,
They smoke, and drink,
They don't have your style.

Then you turn away from them,
Seeming disgusted,
And while you walk on a bit faster,
You think: I'll never be like them.

Are You Sure?

So many times a year
I think of things
That happened to my friends,
On purpose or not.

Things I cannot understand,
Or don't want to.
Things that sound so frightening,
Or that sound so strange.

Then I shake my head,
Seeming oh so clever,
And while I live on my way,
I think: I'll never be like them.

Am I Sure?

So many times in our lives
We read about war,
Or things that happened in the past,
Like National Socialism and massacres.

We object to those things,
Things we cannot believe,
Things that are so cruel.
What's good about killing the innocent?

Then we look away,
Seeming ashamed,
And while we get busy doing other stuff,
We think: We would have never been like them.

But Can We Be Sure?

You've clearly spoken the truth in this poem, I hope many people read this, it should get them thinking...
I love these rhetorical questions, they fulfill their purpose really well.

Und irgendwie macht es mich betroffen (sorry, I can't think of a way to say that in English right now)

    Thanks for sharing!
    Keep on writing!
