The Dancer

Nervous, she pulls her dress on, and slips into her shoes
Everyone is whispering, the curtain will rise soon
She hears excited chatter beyond the silk and dark
And wonders what they want from her when she proceeds on stage
Softly they pull her sideways; there's makeup to be done
She fidgets here and fidgets there, trying to calm her heart

The countdown has begun, and she stands tall and poised
The curtain's up and cheers explode as she makes her entrance
They all are smiling, showing her that there's nothing to fear
And with those grins she finds in her a fire to keep her strong
The music starts and fresh, renewed, the girl begins to dance
No longer scared of falling down, her jumps and leaps now soar

Nobody moves as they watch her, too beautiful for words
All is silent, even hearts stop beating at her grace
The music starts to slow as the dancer makes her bow
The crowd goes wild as she grins and bows for them once more
Roses land at her posed feet, they all say she's the best
With a thank you, a reward and lift, she makes her way offstage.

Author notes

I was trying to capture the feeling of pure happiness one gets when you realize that everyone is cheering for you. I've never been in this situation, but it's something I've always wanted. Hope you like!
