What make me a poet?
I rarely write in rhyme,
free-style prose is my way,
with thoughts that enter my head,
rushing as if to be heard,
does this make me a poet?
I don't know,
some say no, you use no form,
you don't write in sonnet,
haiku or some other recognized style,
you don't rhyme in complex couplets,
that blow the technical people out
of their minds,
I write for contests of my choice,
I express my pain or that of others
that I have know or know currently,
I write for my Goddess,
expressions of devotion and love,
for nature, to remind people
of what we are losing,
I write to express the darkness
that enter's my soul when the pain
of existence and my body are too much
and must be acknowledged to keep depression away,
I write with anger and sadness
at man's folly when politics get
in the way of helping one's fellow man,
and of society's blind eye to that which
it does not wish to see
in secret I write in the forms that to some
are oh so important, practicing in quiet 'till
something presentable comes out
(which it has yet to do)
In my mind I am a poet, but
all things are subjective,
to some I am not,
and that is okay,
because one can not be everything
to everyone, but to me,
Yes, I Am a Poet,
and I am the one that counts.

after meeting and reading wonderful poets and poems like you and yours ,i have developed a feeling that i don't deserve to be called a poet at all.....so impressive

Merry meet,
Don't tell yourself that you can't write. Like learning to do anything, you have to practice, practice, practice. If you are really despairing, join one of the classes they offer here at the site. They're free and you'll have people to help you learn the different forms, ect.

i think that is how the majority of us feel on here, who is to say what defines a poet- it is like defining what is modern art it will always cause some form of contrversy no matter what you say.
i particually liked the last note of you being the only one who counts, that is exactly how it should be.

This is precisely how I feel as a poet (which I only recently admitted that I am, in my way). I really like how you spoke here and what you said; it made "I am what I am" much more profound and compelling.
