The Sweetgrass Cover

Missing image
This is the sweetgrass cover of my life.
Daughter, will you have it?

The little flowers there among the grasses
I have forgotten how they are called
who I thought of when I wove them there

in the field, the little pinks stand up
year after year

The threshers come and lay them down
They have these flails of wood they use

You have seen them, my dear, in the window
of the dressmaker
She uses them to prop up the brocades
and ancient

though they are, they still can speak
a kind of rustic language that we recognize
when we lie down
in sweetgrass, close our eyes.

though they are they still can speak

My tongue tripped on this line. I think a comma after the word "are" may help.

This is a beautiful poem. Love the imagery. Thank you for entering.

Yes, it's a woman now that I look at it more closely. I like the journey you take here from the flowers to the threshers to the flails to the dressmaker. I think you have researched some of these details. It's quite European! I got a feeling of mystery about the "daughter" he's addressing.

The grass and flowers remind me of Monet, not that I'm an expert.

    I really like your write.

Thank you, the detail of the flails being found at the dressmaker's is actual. I kept meaning to take a photo of the window as she had it set up last spring with the old farming implements because it quite appealed to me.

    nicely penned

reads of recollection in a nostalgic tone that seems to bring the past times of the paintings thoughts to life. good write.
