daddy got onto a boat yesterday
i dont know where he went
i dont know when hes coming home
but he made me promise
to be his little soldier
to be his little patriot
to be his little girl
to help mommy take care
of my little brother
and make sure mommy is okay
to write him everyday
to send him my pictures
and my silly little poems
the day before daddy left
he took me to the store
i have a big plastic container
that we filled together
with color pencils
crayons and color markers
so while hes gone
i shouldnt run out
i have taken out a packet
of my color pencils
and lined them all up
so now im ready to write
a letter and a silly poem
maybe later i will draw
to my daddy so far away
doing what he thinks is right
protecting my freedom
protecting his family
mommy says that hes going
to what is called
the gulf war but which one?
i know there are a lot of gulf's
out there in the big world
i might only be four
but my daddy has been
around the world three times
one day when im big
i hope i will really be
my daddy's little soldier
but right now
i think i will just
write a silly little poem
with my pretty colored pencils

this was so sweet;
you did a wonderful job of writing this from the child's point of view, in fact as I was reading, I did wonder if you had been through this yourself as a child, and thus knew how to portray it from the child's eyes
Taking us through this journey of hers was done so simpley, and i think that this is what made it so successfull!
Thanks for entering

Thank you for this wonderful entry to my contest you brought tears to my eyes, im not sure if you know that im an Army wife and that my son's daddy has went off to war twice and the third time is right around the corner i love how you have described that you promised him you would take care of your mommy and your brother and how mention that you stocked up on writing things so you wouldn't run out while he was gone, its fun for me to even write letters with multi colored pens even though im all grown up, thank you for taking your time and memories to pen this wonderful poem ~Amy
