The Silence

Briskly pacing down an abandoned alley
Heels tapping on the road-
The sound echoes in the silence
This night, the air is still and cool
Quite different from the club she just left.
Constantly turning to look behind her,
these swift movements send her red dress swirling about.
Like the red flag which is presented before the bull,
Her predator, silently gaining speed-
Every soft tap of his leather soles go unnoticed.

An accidental step and she goes down to the ground,
Softly twisted ankle makes it difficult to get back up.
She cannot let him reach her, she cannot let him overpower her.
So she crawls into the dark shadows in hopes to remain hidden.
Cradled into a tight red ball she gently rocks back and forth,
Tearing from the thoughts that haunt her in the silence.
Cold wet cheeks and shivering from the growing fear.

She wonders, where is my love? where are my friends?
He always said he would protect her from him, from the pain.
Though where is he now? He is merely a figment of her imagination
And as wonderful it is, something that is imaginary cannot save her.
Something that is imaginary can never dry her tears or clean them away
Something that is imaginary cannot bring her home and look after her.

So here she is, afraid and alone- left and abandoned in the dark
With only the memory of him, an imaginary friend to lend some comfort
-through these difficult times, when she is cold and broken down.
Her stealthy follower always searching
...quietly seeking her in the shadows.

I really liked the simile with the red flag and the bull--that definitely caught my attention.
This is quite a sad piece, but very well written. Good job!
