the sacred medicine of Porcupine –
who playfully and gently walks beside him –
a peaceful man and precious friend of mine.
The Spirit-Drums he makes, enchant my senses,
sweet souls of animals and trees entwine,
dissolving deep within my last defences,
caressing wounded heart with sound divine.
He marries Elk and Cedar; sage is burning,
awakens new-born baby-drums with care.
Through gentle drumbeat, he fulfills their yearning
their healing gifts with human souls to share.
My soul delights with joy and recognition,
my heartbeat’s one with Earth, by Spirit’s grace.
For Maker-Of-The-Drum : accomplished mission !
A peaceful smile illuminates his face …

Hoodwinked!
This has brilliant imagery and excellent word choice to paint the most interesting pictures...
I'm sorry I am late with the hoodwink, but hope you are glad for more comments!

What thrills- the marrying of wood and skin
The symbolic embrace of the rhythms of life
But what I see is the moon in the drumhead
I have a friend who thinks poets are myopically only seeing the half of the circle of life, and that is the circle of death, wholesale death...
I haven't crafted a satisfactory response
I know he is right on some level; the cedar is cut, the elk has bled and quartered...
The turkey and potatoes both died so that I can live another day...
But rhythms are played, and words are captured and mounted for display -
Im reading a lot about this subject at the moment. What can i say, this is such a well crafted and thoughtful piece of work. You have created a superb devotion for the drum maker. I was carried along almost on a chant. Such choice words of description leave my jaw hanging:-
The Spirit-Drums he makes, enchant my senses,
sweet souls of animals and trees entwine,
dissolving deep within my last defences,
caressing wounded heart with sound divine
Absolutely beautiful my friend !! I shall be back for more

Hello Maa
What a lovely dedication to your friend Ricky the Drummaker!
As I read your poem I can hear the drum beat in my mind. And as your poem pictures the image of this young born drums that echo's the sound of this innocent man's shi, I can feel the peace that his music bring.
Your talent through this poem brings this event to life.
Keep well

hello my friend,
indeed, the porcupine thingie is a more personal aspect linked to ricky, he just loves them and has a special relationship with them (maybe it's his totem-animal, he is native american) ... people who love him, offer him hedgehog-objects thinking that's what porcupines look are
...
thanks goodness you haven't got a porcupine residing in your garden !
much love,

This is a wonderful dedication to your drummaker friend - I didn't know this connection with porcupine but this native lore fascinates me and your rhyme is perfect. I can really feel the chant in this and hear the drums that would accompany it.
We raised a baby porcupine when I was young and have a resident hedgehog in our garden at the moment. They are a little more accessible - you can actually catch and touch them!

Oh, this is beautiful. Lovely imagery here, and I like the story hidden behind the words.

Hello Maa. A lovely dedication to The Drummaker; has a lovely ring to it, haaha. As it is a dedication to him there will be things that this person will find within your words that I may miss out, either way, it reads as a warm thankful write and an appreciation of the person. Your rhythm and rhyme seemed fine to me, nothing read forced, and it had your trademark ambience to it. My regards.

Ah, maa, your trail to the visuals
enhanced the words even more,
form following function,
art born from the heart;
form, the beating rhythm
as one, art.
Your spirit has spoken, beautifully.

Very beautiful imagery, word choice, meaning and flow in these lines. I enjoyed it and the background is lovely as well. Good to see and read a poem from your pen. I like the part of the marriage of elk and cedar
