Bit by bit, layer by toiled layer,
his hands hammer and crafted
this precious edifice for the one he loved.
How his mind was consumed
to make this castle for his queen,
the angel who claimed a mariner's heart
who once thought the sea his only wife.
With passion to adorn her in a wedded paradise,
he had so many cherished treasures
summoned from the farthest shores.
Exquisite furnishing from Europe's stores,
finest linens, china and more,
all to make their life together
as opulent as the feelings he had
for the one he totally adored.
She would wait at the dock
holding onto him with affection's embrace,
each time a new ship arrived,
eyes bewitched by his gifts
feeling expressed in kisses and smiles.
Always, after each new arrival,
would he place a trail of lilac petals
along the path, because she loved their scent.
Their wedding drew a throng of family and friends,
all following them to the harbor for their honeymoon sail.
No one able to comprehend the shock
over their tragic death during the storm.
The house stood still for several years,
but was never silent,
neighbors seeing the couple in the window
sometimes lit candlestick floating up the stairs at night
plus the sound of his boots walking an her laughter.
Many owners have possessed title to the abode,
all content with sounds that linger
and finding lilac petals on the floor.
But ever aware that dreams at night
will take them to the sea,
on a ship captained by the builder
with his wife at his side,
waking in the morning feeling refreshed,
but remembering the haunting look in their eyes,
while savoring the blend of peace on the waves
with the memory of their eerie ghostly gaze.
